How To Do a Virtual Interview – Physician Edition

  1. Treat it as a real interview. Dress professionally, just like you would for an in-person interview.
  2. Use a computer. If you must use a phone, make sure it’s on a stand or somewhere stable.
  3. Get in a well-lit area with a non-distracting background.
  4. Be present and focused.
  5. Turn off all alerts on your device – it’s distracting for both parties.
  6. Research the organization and the person you're interviewing with ahead of time. If you’re working with a recruiting firm, your recruiter contact can help you prep!
  7. Ask questions. It shows that you’re interested!
  8. Make sure that your device is fully charged and that all updates have been completed.
  9. For better sound quality, try using headphones or a microphone attachment.
  10. Be sure that you are in an area with a strong Wi-Fi connection and that you have downloaded any necessary applications ahead of time.

Most importantly, approach every interview as if you want an offer.

How To Do a Virtual Interview – Organization Edition

  1. Provide the candidate with a tailored experience based on their interests and motivations.
  2. Know the goal of your interview – is to get an offer out and contract signed? Or is it more like a pre-interview phone call?
  3. Set up their virtual interview to mirror your traditional interview process as much as possible.
  4. Build out the interview schedule just like you would an onsite visit, with scheduled meetings throughout the day.
  5. Try to avoid more than 2 people on a call if possible.
  6. Have a Community Representative—someone who would normally do your community tour and answer the candidate’s questions about schools, homes, and amenities.
  7. If you must do a large group call, be sure to delegate a moderator to keep the conversation going and/or prevent overtalking.
  8. Make sure all participants in the call are prepared with questions and dialogue.

Remember that you are selling them just as much as they are selling you.
